DEMOCRATIC EROSION IN SPAIN DURING THE GOVERNMENTS OF PEDRO SÁNCHEZ (2018-2026) (LA EROSIÓN DEMOCRÁTICA EN ESPAÑA DURANTE LOS GOBIERNOS DE PEDRO SÁNCHEZ )

This report goes beyond a diagnosis of the Spanish case. Its most original contribution is one that confronts a persistent blind spot in the academic literature on democratic erosion: the tendency to associate the phenomenon exclusively with radical populisms of the right and left. Spain demonstrates that erosion can also emerge from the centre of the political system, from a party belonging to the European social-democratic tradition, a member of the Party of European Socialists, governing within the framework of the European Union and NATO. The cases of Romania, Albania, and Malta — analysed in comparative perspective — confirm that there exists a recognisable pattern of institutional deterioration within the European socialist family that has until now not received the academic scrutiny it deserves.

Este informe va más allá del diagnóstico del caso español. Su aportación más original es la que confronta un punto ciego persistente en la literatura académica sobre erosión democrática: la tendencia a asociar el fenómeno exclusivamente con los populismos radicales de derecha e izquierda. España demuestra que la erosión puede emerger también desde el centro del sistema político, desde un partido perteneciente a la tradición socialdemócrata europea, miembro del Partido Socialista Europeo, gobernando dentro del marco de la Unión Europea y la OTAN. Los casos de Rumanía, Albania y Malta —analizados en perspectiva comparada— confirman que existe un patrón reconocible de deterioro institucional dentro de la familia socialista europea que hasta ahora no ha recibido el escrutinio académico que merece.
