What is the relationship between the individual and society? What makes a political order legitimate? Is freedom compatible with equality? Mapping Western Political Thought is an exercise in comparative analysis that traverses the great traditions of contemporary political philosophy with the purpose of illuminating the deep assumptions underlying each one: their conception of the subject and of the community, their vision of human nature, and their response to the question of the origin and legitimacy of the political.

The itinerary begins with the two great traditions that have dominated modern debate. Liberalism is examined in all its internal plurality, from classical liberalism and libertarianism to its egalitarian, perfectionist, and feminist versions, passing through its historical models and its contemporary crises of legitimacy. Marxism is analysed with equal rigour, from its philosophical foundations and its anthropology of labour to its multiple currents—Western, structuralist, analytical, ecological, feminist, postcolonial—and the lessons drawn from its historical experiences.

To these foundational traditions are added others that articulate alternative or complementary responses: civic republicanism, with its concept of freedom as non-domination; communitarianism, with its critique of the unencumbered individual of liberalism; conservatism, with its epistemology of prudence and its philosophy of belonging; social democracy, which demonstrated that freedom without material resources is an empty promise; and political feminism, which irreversibly transformed the categories through which political philosophy thinks power, justice, and citizenship by rendering visible the gender dimension that all preceding traditions had systematically ignored.

The volume concludes with two phenomena that decisively define the current political scene: populism, analysed as a transversal phenomenon that cuts across both the left and the right, and the new radical right, whose challenge to the liberal and egalitarian order demands to be understood before it can be confronted.

None of these traditions exhausts the questions. All of them illuminate them from angles that the others tend to obscure. That is the deepest argument this book advances: that the richness of Western political thought resides not in any single tradition taken in isolation, but in the permanent tension among them—in the way each compels the others to be more consistent with their own premises.
